As a former dancer, I often feel a sense of nostalgia when I encounter anything related to ballet. I’m drawn to the subject with a mix of bittersweet joy. This piece captures a rare, candid moment of ballerinas off the stage, walking together through the streets in a fleeting moment of freedom. Their graceful forms are still present, but they’ve traded pointe shoes for worn tekkies and flip-flops, allowing themselves a break from the rigors of performance.

I was captivated by this contrast—the elegance of their posture set against the casual informality of the moment. It’s a reflection of grounding, both physically and emotionally, as suggested by the title, “À Terre,” a ballet term meaning “on the ground.” The loose, gestural lines and soft tonal shifts reflect the fleeting nature of this moment, , where the dancers’ poise lingers even as they relax into the everyday. The monochrome palette emphasizes textures and mood, inviting the viewer to find beauty not just in performance, but also in rest.
